Gary Cowell first opened his converted eight service bay dealership on December 1, 1967. He had four employees, and within the first month had sold 2 new and 1 pre-owned vehicles. By 1972 Cowell Volkswagen had outgrown their original space, resulting Gary in purchasing the property next door – building a brand new location that housed not only Volkswagen but also Audi and Porsche vehicles.Without a doubt, Cowell Auto Group is an industry leader. They were one of the first dealerships to relocate to the Richmond Auto Mall – as Gary Cowell was one of the founders in 1985. Today, the Cowell family not only owns Cowell Volkswagen but also owns Audi of Richmond, Jaguar Richmond, Land Rover of Richmond, and Infiniti of Richmond. All dealerships except Infiniti of Richmond are located in the Richmond Auto Mall, employing over 350 people.
Cowell’s two sons Ryan and Rand Cowell, now both work in the business. They are university and Dealer Academy graduates who were encouraged to broadly explore all career opportunities. But like their father, they love the automotive industry. Ryan and Rand are both very positive about the future of the company, the products that they offer, as well as, the staff and customers that they work with on a daily basis.
